Rocks hold off Wolves

Rocks 85-79 Wolves

Glasgow Rocks 85 (23, 36, 59) (Davis 20, Harrison 15, Robinson/Achara 12)
Worcester Wolves 79 (12, 28, 47) (Ocitti 26, Kazlauskas 19, Masiulis 12)

The Rocks secured an 85-79 victory over Worcester Wolves at the Emirates Arena to move up to 8th position in the BBL Championship table with a 2-3 record, replacing London Lions in the final BBL Playoffs qualification spot.  Wolves remain 4th with 10 points from 10 games.

Some good Rocks basketball led to a big 25-7 run that finished early in the second quarter, leaving the Rocks leading 27-12.

Wolves fought back though, scoring 9 unanswered points, including 7 from Stanley Ocitti to reduce the Rocks lead to 27-21. But that was as close as Wolves would get in the second quarter and the Rocks went into half-time leading 36-28.

In the second half, 8 of the first 9 field goals came from beyond the 3-point line as two 3s from Donald Robinson as well as 3s from Gareth Murray, EJ Harrison and Sterling Davis followed by a Robinson dunk saw Rocks extend their lead to 53-37. Wolves again fought back though, going on an 8-0 run that included 2 Arnas Kaszlauskas 3-pointers to halve the Rocks lead to 8 points.

3-pointers from both Kieron Achara and Sterling Davis had the Rocks up by 15 early in the fourth at 66-51, but Wolves kept trying and put together a 21-12 run to bring the Wolves within just 6 points at 78-72.

However, with just 43 seconds remaining the clock was on the Rocks’ side as Wolves needed to foul to keep the game alive. EJ Harrison made all 4 of his free throws and Gareth Murray converted both his efforts to put Rocks up 84-74 with only 19 seconds remaining. Wolves’ Stuart Thomson hit a 3-pointer, but missed the chance to make it a 4-point play at the free throw line and Arturas Masiulis made a field goal for Wolves but they just didn’t have enough time left and Rocks won the game 85-79.

Player/coach Sterling Davis led Rocks scorers with 20 points, also grabbing 7 boards in his effort. EJ Harrison finished with 15 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. For Wolves, Stanley Ocitti scored 26 points off 10/15 field goal shooting and 5/8 3-point shooting while also grabbing 9 boards. Arturas Masiulis ended the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
