Durham Wildcats and Glasgow Rocks go head-to-head at Durham University this afternoon with BBL Championship points at stake.
Durham’s win against London Lion last week means they are one of three sides tied in ninth spot with 8-15 record as the race for a play-off spot intensifies. Meanwhile the Rocks are now up to third place in the BBL Championship table with 15 wins from 23 games, although they have played the most games of the top half teams.
The Rocks hold a 1-0 lead in this season’s series of games having won 92-82 at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre when they met at the start of the season and they also won all five meetings last season as the Wildcats struggled in their debut BBL campaign.
Wildcats’ coach Dave Elderkin is well aware his team face a tough test on Sunday: “We’ve never beaten the Rocks, but our last meeting was way back in September and since that encounter we know they’ve changed players
“We have footage which will give us a feel for the way recent signings play. EJ [Harrison], Donald Robinson and Sterling [Davis] played well at Aycliffe in the final quarter. We know they’ll be well organised and we think we might see some zone defence.”
Despite that early-season win against the Wildcats, Rocks’ player-coach Sterling Davis believes that Durham have made steady progress this season: “I think this is a team that has steadily improved as the season has gone on. Their biggest strength and weapon is their discipline.
“Ralph Bucci is their motor. It’s not always about his scoring but leadership on the floor.
“It’s been a good while since we have seen Durham so any conceptions we have from our last meeting will all be re-evaluated.”
We’ll be covering the game on Twitter from 4PM – hope you can join us and get involved!
