We are delighted to announce that the Rocks have been named the “Sports Team of the Year” by the Royal Geological Society for our work in the promotion of petrology and mineralogy in the UK through sport.
At a star-studded affair at the Society’s headquarters in Piccadilly, London last night the Rocks narrowly pipped defending four-time champions – and fellow basketball team – the Denver Nuggets to the coveted award.
Rocks’ general manager Daniel Bajwoluk was thrilled with the award. “This is a great honour for the club and a great testament to the success we’re having this season – both on the court and off it.”
“I think the perception of geologists is of nerdy guys with little hammers, so if we can help the Society reach a new, younger audience through sport with our brand then that’s a great by-product of what we’re doing. Hopefully we’ll get a few of their guys down to some games too – but they’ll have to leave their little hammers at home!”
Society chairman Joe Kerr felt the Rocks were stand-out winners. “We’re always keen to explore different ways to reach potential new geologists and basketball is synonymous with geology – I believe, a basketball is even called a “rock” colloquially in some places.”
“We’re delighted to present this award to the Glasgow Rocks, our first UK winner in five years. The Rocks brand is a fast becoming a real symbol of quality and family-orientated entertainment, and if we can help translate it into an interest in geology then it’s a great fit for what we’re doing.”
The award caps a great weekend for the team, which sees them require just one win from their remaining two games to guarantee a 3rd place finish in the BBL Championship.
(this was, of course, an April Fools’ Joke… except the bit about it being a great weekend!)
