For the first time in a while the annual Rocks’ St. Andrew’s First Aid MVP Award is just too close to call.
It’s a real testament to the team mentality and style of play this season – where everyone has a role and plays for each other – that a single stand-out MVP can’t easily be determined. Indeed, when Sterling says “these guys play together more than any other team I’ve seen” he isn’t joking!
But a St. Andrew’s First Aid MVP has to be named – and from voting so far it’s still very much a three horse race between Gareth, Sterling and The Don. At the time of writing each of those guys has exactly the same amount of votes on our Facebook poll, such is the tightness of this year’s race!
Either one would be a worthy winner, but here’s a run-down of why you should vote for each:
Gareth Murray (12.5PPG/5.9RPG/3.3APG)
It’s a well-known fact that when Gareth plays well the Rocks play well. He is a true all-round player at both ends of the court, and provides so many intangibles that don’t show up in the box score. Deadly from downtown, G has also contributed his share of highlight dunks and incredible assists this season, while also pulling down just under 6 boards per game. After a brief dip in form mid-season, Gareth showed just what he can do against the Heat on Friday when required and seems to be back at his peak in time for the playoffs.
Sterling Davis (11.3PPG/4.5RPG/2.3APG)
The role of a player/coach is always a tough balance, which makes Sterling’s play this season even more remarkable. Leading from the front, Sterling’s mid-season form was quite incredible and propelled the team on a 7-0 league run to put them right back in the hunt for a 3rd place finish. His 30 point performance in Durham was a highlight, and he’s even got his annual dunk in the bag already!
Donald Robinson (16.0PPG/3.4RPG/2.8APG)
The Don has been electric in his first season at the Rocks, as showcased by his incredible mid-season highlight reel. He leads the team in scoring and has 7 of the top 10 team scoring performances over the course of the season… but is also shooting over 53% from the floor! High-flying dunks? Check. Shooting over 43% from downtown? Check. Ability to make your jaw drop? Check.
With voting so tight this season we’re giving fans two chances to vote – one on the website (check the sidebar) and another on Facebook. We’ll take the combined votes from the two polls and present our MVP Award at this Sunday’s game against the Tigers. Make your votes count!
