Rocks U14 National Champions

Glasgow Rocks U14 Boys were crowned National Champions on Saturday (25th May) at Dundee International Sports Centre. They
defeated St Mirren 41-22 in what was a convincing win for the Rocks team led by Scotland forwards Jason Carr and David Adebayo.

The U14 team (or Rocks Academy as it’s known) was started 2 years ago with the help of awards for all funding and the team played in the Strathclyde U16 league. The team did not win one game and lost every game by 30 or more points (sometimes close to 70 points depending on the opponent), but that didn’t stop the players from trying their best and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The team finished 4th at the regional development league last year and having kept nearly every player from that team, they looked strong going into this season.

The team qualified for the National Challenge (12 best U14 teams from all over Scotland) as they finished tied in first place with St Mirren in the west regional development league. They swept through to the final undefeated where they met their old rivals ‘St Mirren’ in what was tipped to be a closely fought encounter. The Rocks had played composed team orientated basketball all day and coach Stacey MacDonald wasn’t about to change this style. It worked beautifully as the Rocks took firm control of the game in the 3rd quarter and pulled away from the Saints as they began to fall apart. Great ball movement and stifling defence from the Rocks put an end to any hopes of a comeback for St Mirren and the Rocks ran out winners 41-22.

Jason Carr and David Adebayo were named in the All Star 5 team along with fellow Glasgow player Alexander Geddes (Glasgow City).

Congratulations to all the players and the head coach Stacey MacDonald for their fantastic success.
