Gareth Murray will lead Scotland at the International Summer Slam where Scotland will take on England.
Scotland’s captain had a good season with the Rocks finishing third at the end of the season and was named Player of the Year for the Rocks. The forward from Arbroath comments : “I’m feeling great, had good season with the Rocks, and this preparation for next summer is going well”.
Scotland had their first test when they traveled to Luxembourg at the end of the month. We asked him about his first court experience with Scotland this season “ We are looking good, we have been working hard every session, everyone in the squad is on board with what the coaches have put in place so far.”
“My highlight has to be how hard and well we played in Luxembourg who are a Euro B team. We played excellent basketball for large parts of the games, which has given us confidence that we can play at that level when given the opportunity.”
The next step for Scotland in their run to Euro C next season will be England at the International Summer Slam. Scotland Senior Men will play back to back games next Saturday and Sunday at Meadowbank Stadium. The English squad is stacked with some of the best home grown players from the British Basketball League; including Treble, Play-Off, League and Cup winners, Anthony Rowe and Barry Lamble from Leicester Riders and Trophy Winner Mike Tuck from Sheffield Sharks. When we asked Gareth about the opposition he said “ I play against these guys every week so I know them very well, they have some great athletes who will play hard and work together, it’s going be a tough test for us.”
“We are ready for it, but we have a ways to go before we are ready for next summer but this early preparation is essential for us to work towards winning EURO C and moving up to EURO B.
“My expectations for this team are very high. We have some excellent talent, who have shown that we work well as a team. All players that are involved are fully committed to the program moving forward.”
This is a great opportunity to showcase basketball and see Scotland top players in action. We asked Scotland’s captain why people should come to Meadowbank Sports Centre this weekend to support Scotland and basketball. Gareth commented “Any sport where you see someone representing your country you should be behind them 100%. Whether it be table tennis, athletics or basketball. Coming to watch basketball you will soon realise how fun and exciting the game is. All ages can play and it’s always a great family occasion. Come out and support your country, if you’ve never been before, try something new, you never know you might get hooked.”
