The Glasgow Rocks have pulled off the long awaited signature of American centre Daniel Northern for the 2013-14 BBL season. Northern (6’9, 220lbs.), a native of Warner Robbins, Georgia, and graduate of Tennessee Tech University, last graced these shores when he played for the Milton Keynes Lions during the 2011-12 season where he averaged an impressive double-double of 15.6 points per game and a league leading 12.1 rebounds per game while also finishing 2nd in blocked shots per game at just under two. Northern has since played in the South American leagues with Osorno Basquetbol (Chile) and also Halcones del Norte (Columbia) where he averaged a combined 18.6 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game.
These stats alone are what enticed the Rocks courtship and final coupe of a player of Northerns’ calibre as said by Rocks play-caller Sterling Davis.
“Daniel is a guy we have been heavily recruiting over the last year now. He is exactly the player we need; and have been lacking over the last few seasons with his tenaciousness both in scoring and rebounding. I think he will work very well with the group we are trying to assemble”.
“It’s a great start to be able to bring in a big guy who has experience and personal success in the league”
Rocks General Manager, Daniel Bajwoluk is excited to have been able to lure the American big man north of the border and expects big things from him.
“It has been our intent on bringing in a big man that has the all round capabilities that Northern has for quite some time now. He has the ability to alter shots at the defensive end and most importantly brings with him a natural knack for rebounding the ball at both ends of the floor. I expect great things from our new big man for the 2013/14 season”
The Rocks finished 3rd in the BBL championship last season, however, it all culminated with an unexpected early exit out of the Playoffs. The Glasgow side will be looking to change fortunes for the new campaign and capitalise off of their inaugural season at the Emirates Arena which saw attendance reach record levels for the Scottish side.
The Glasgow Rocks will be holding their annual Summer Camp at the Emirates Arena on Sunday the 28th July from 12pm-4pm. A record amount of participants are expected to attend. Player/Coach Sterling Davis as well as Scotland Captain Gareth Murray will be assisting with the camp.
More signings are expected to be announced in the near future along with a finalised fixture schedule for the 2013/14 BBL Season.
