On the 10th August pupils from St Benedict’s Primary School, ( Easterhouse, Glasgow) the Scottish Jump2it Champions, begin their journey to London to take on St Aloysius Primary School, (Hebburn, Newcastle) Hoops4Health Champions, before the much anticipated Great Britain v’s Puerto Rico basketball match. The team from St Benedict’s beat off stiff competition in the form of Jump2it finalists from Stirling to take the Champion of Champions crown for the programme in Scotland.
They have been training hard all summer in preparation for this Scotland v England (Rocks v Eagles) match up, with guest coaches, Sterling Davis from the Rocks and basketballscotland representatives dropping into the sessions to give the youngsters some advice about performing on the big stage.
As well as the accolade of playing in the CopperBox at the Olympic Park the pupils will also be cheering on Great Britain and Rocks star Gareth Murray in their game as well as seeing some of the sights in London throughout their 3 day trip to the capital.
Scottish Sports Futures (SSF) have been working with the participants as well as various partners all summer and have managed to secure sponsorship from various organisations to make the trip happen. This trip would not be possible without CashBack for Communities, sportscotland, Virgin Trains, Hovis, The BBL, Spalding, The Forge, Sports Direct and Briggs Engineering who have all in some way helped make this opportunity a reality for these young stars of the future.
