Rocks introduce some Croatian flavour to line-up
The Glasgow Rocks have pulled off a Croatian double whammy, as they confirm the signing of two Croatian born players for the 2013/14 season.
The first player to sign on the dotted line was Croatian 6’8” Power Forward, Fran Urli, who comes into the BBL fresh from a season in the Swedish BasketLigen playing for Eco Oredbro, where he averaged 8.1ppg and 4.4rpg.
Urli will give the Rocks a much stronger inside presence as he will be at hand to help out other big man, 6’9” Daniel Northern, who the Rocks signed during the earlier stages of the off-season. Coach Sterling Davis, is happy with the way the Rocks squad is coming together, especially with the extra experience and height that he is bringing in.
“It was important for us to bring in as much experience as we could and Fran definitely fits that mould with not only his professional career last season but also playing at a very good level in the college systems. Fran is a very talented, hard-nosed player who works extremely hard on both ends of the floor which he proved in Sweden last season. He will come in hungry to prove himself in the BBL.”
The other half of the Croatian double whammy comes in the form of 6’6”shooting guard, Marin Zelalija, who comes into the rocks squad via NCAA2 College team, SW Oklahoma St, where he averaged 12ppg and shot 37% from beyond the 3 point line.
Zelalija is a left hander renowned for his ability to knock down the outside shot. He will be a legitimate threat anywhere within the half way line and his height should cause some match-up problems for the opposition at both ends of the floor. Rocks play-caller, Sterling Davis had the following to say about his most recent acquisition.
“Marin is from a country deep-rooted in basketball so he has got a great knowledge of the game. He has a reputation of being a dead-eye shooter but he can also put the ball on the floor and create for others. He will definitely be an asset to us with his ability to stretch the defence with his shooting ability and at his size, will pose a problem for his opponents.”
The Glasgow Rocks squad now stands at 7 with more singings due to be announced in the weeks leading up to the beginning of the season.
With the official season opener only 7 weeks away the Rocks are proud to announce that in conjunction with Glasgow Life, they will be hosting an Invitational Pre-season Event spanning over 2 days in September.
