The Glasgow Rocks, in conjunction with Glasgow Life, will be hosting an invitational pre-season event on the 21st and 22nd of September at Glasgow’s very own Emirates Arena. The event will introduce a sense of international basketball flair, with 2 USA select squads making the trip across the Atlantic and one well established German ProA club making the quick trip north to take on the only professional basketball team in Scotland, Glasgow Rocks.
USA Select players go through a vigorous selection process and consist of some of the top USA college basketball talent available on the market. It will be the first time that Sean Kilmartin, owner of USA Select Basketball, will be bringing 2 squads to Glasgow and he is excited about giving his players an opportunity to play at such an event.
“USA Select Basketball is very honoured to be part of this multi country event hosted by Glasgow. The Rocks are not only one of the premier clubs in British Basketball but, in my opinion, one of the better clubs in all of European basketball! The growth and success of basketball in Scotland is, in large part, due to the Rocks and their community involvement. We have been a partner with the Rocks for a decade and this trip is always a highlight for us.”
The pre-season event will also introduce some European flavor into the mix with the inclusion of German ProA team, MLP Academics Heidelberg. It will be the first time that such a high profile European team will make the trip to Glasgow. Tony Garbelotto, former Newcastle Eagles and Mersey Tigers BBL Coach, will be the man in charge of the German club and he feels this is a perfect pre-season warm-up run for his squad.
“We are extremely excited to be playing in such a prestigious tournament in a fantastic arena against two great teams. For us, this is a great way to end our pre season schedule and we are expecting two tough but exciting games. The players, staff and management of MLP Academics Heidelberg are looking forward to our trip to Glasgow and cannot wait for the games.”
The team that arguably has the most to gain from the weekend will be that of the Glasgow Rocks, who will be looking to get a couple of very important pre-season fixtures under their belt in preparation for their 6th October Season opener against Surrey United. The Rocks will be looking to establish their new roster and prove to fans that they are legitimate contenders for Silverware this season. Coach, Sterling Davis had the following to say about the upcoming event.
“We are very excited to be hosting what we hope to be an excellent invitational pre-season tournament that will showcase talent from all over the world. This will give our fans their first glimpse of our new Rocks team. Rarely do you get the chance to host such an event in your home venue that gives the fans two days of good basketball to enjoy. We are hoping to get great support from our fans to start things off in the right direction.”
Saturday the 21st September will see MLP Academics Heidelberg take on Team USA Royals (4:45pm) followed by the Glasgow Rocks taking on Team USA Reds (7:15pm), which will mark the return of 7’4” University of Kentucky player, Shagari Alleyne.
Sunday the 22nd will begin with USA Select players running a unique Kids Basketball Camp at 12:00pm. Kids between the ages of 7 and 18 are all welcome to attend this special event (£15 per participant). This will be followed by an exhibition match between both USA squads at 2:30pm. The weekend will round off with what will be considered by many as the ‘Main Event’. At 5:00pm the Glasgow Rocks will take on Tony Garbelotto’s MLP Academics Heidelberg in what should be a fitting end to an action packed weekend of basketball.
Ticket prices are going from £10 per adult and £6 per child for a full day of basketball. Please go to www.glasgowrocks.co.uk/tickets for full details.
