Jonny Bunyan returns

Rocks maul Tigers to finish 3rd

Jonny Bunyan will return to the Glasgow Rocks for a 3rd straight season after a more than impressive initial 2 years with the club.

Jonny has been part of the Glasgow Rocks squad for the past 2 seasons and has continually shown improvement in his game. This season will see him step up into a more pivotal role for the Rocks as he takes on the responsibility of back-up point guard. Jonny states that he is more than ready for the task at hand.

I am looking forward to an increased role within the Rocks team this season and playing another term with EJ, Gareth and Sterling. It looks as though we have a great group of guys this season. I am desperate to emulate my brother Keith and bring home some silverware to the Rocks in what is now my third season I am ready to make a valuable contribution towards that goal.

Jonny will be full of confidence going into the 2013/14 season after his stellar performances for the Scotland International team during the Edinburgh Summer Slam back in June. Jonny was the stand out performer for the Scottish side scoring 20 and 17 points respectively during the encounters, as the Scots completed a double win over a very strong England side. Not only did Jonny impress during the Summer Slam, but his consistent high level of play was recognised by Basketball Scotland as he also took home the coveted National League MVP Award for the 2012/13 season while playing for the Clark Eriksson Falkirk Fury Basketball Club.

I am excited to be returning after a successful summer with the Scotland National team and I was fortunate to be invited to an Elite Camp in England a couple of weeks ago and that has greatly helped my pre-season training. Returning to play at the fantastic Emirates Arena and be one of the Scots in this Scottish club side is special, particularly when the arena will really be buzzing with the Commonwealth Games next year.

With his resume beginning to turn heads, Jonny will be motivated more than ever to prove himself at the professional level and there is no individual more confident in his abilities as Coach Sterling Davis.

Jonny has really progressed over the last couple of seasons with us on court as well as his work ethic off the court to put himself in a position to play an important role in our team.  I feel very confident Jonny will handle the role well and also be a major contributing factor night after night.

Jonny’s Scottish heritage makes him a valuable commodity for the Glasgow Rocks as he stands as a great role model for any young aspiring Scottish Basketball Player. Head Coach of Clark Eriksson Fury BC, John Bunyan Senior, had the following to say about the appointment of Jonny.

Jonny had a great 12-13 season in guiding us to become Scottish Men’s Champions and he was rightly voted the [Scottish National] League MVP. With excellent performances against England and valuable continued development at the DS8 camp in Leicester, Jonny is ready to make a significant contribution to the Rocks this season.

The rest of the Rocks squad are set to arrive in Glasgow in the coming days with official pre-season training to commence on Wednesday the 4th September.

As it stands, the Rocks first major workout will take place on the 21st and 22nd September at the Emirates Arena during a 2 day pre-season Invitational event. The Rocks will take on a strong USA Select team on Saturday the 21st at 7:15pm, which is set to feature 7’4” University of Kentucky player, Alleyne Shagari. The Rocks will then follow up this fixture with a mouth-watering encounter against German club, MLP Academics Heidelberg on Sunday the 22nd September at 5:00pm. Tickets are currently available at www.glasgowrocks.co.uk for this one of pre-season event!

Jonny Bunyan and the Rocks will then focus on their first game of BBL season which will take place at the Emirates Arena, Sunday the 6th October against the Surrey Heat @ 5:00pm. This fixture will commemorate the 1st Anniversary of the opening of the Emirates Arena, and is set to be the grandest spectacle in the history of the Glasgow Rocks franchise. In association with Glasgow Life the Rocks will be putting together an entertainment package to rival that of any basketball team around the globe. More information will be made public in the coming weeks regarding the Season Opener and the magnitude of the event. It is a night that any Sport fan will not want to miss!!!
