It has proven a particularly difficult few months or so for Sterling Davis and his players since a raft of new dawns and potential fresh starts have failed to spark any kind of significant winning streak or the consistent form everyone associated with the Rocks still craves.
“I think our group has struggled with a mental belief that we can get the job done night after night,” conceded the player-coach.
“I feel at times we are only showing up to play, instead of to win.”
“There are signs of improvement, but whether it is at the start or at the end of a game, there seems to always be this stage of regression that we have not been able to shake.”
Last time out, Rocks were felled by the Plymouth Raiders and Davis is keen to try and learn the lessons from what was a disappointing defeat.
He said, “I thought we went away from what was working for us in getting the ball inside.
“I don’t think Plymouth had an answer for Daniel Northern, but we let their zone re-direct our focus to the perimeter.”
Now it’s a matter of playing a buoyant Manchester Giants twice inside the space of 72 hours, firstly in the BBL Championship and then in the BBL Trophy.
“I think we have our work cut out against the Giants,” warned Davis.
“David Aliu is playing out of his body right now as their leader, but also their supporting cast have really made a huge difference from where they were earlier in the season.
“To have to play any team twice in a space of three days is a huge challenge.
“I think it will be a test of character for both teams, as we both need the points in the BBL Championship whilst also want to progress in the Trophy too.”
Last time they met:
Manchester Giants 98 Glasgow Rocks 87 (BBL Championship, Wright Robinson College, 08/12/2013)
What they say:
Manchester Giants’ in-form forward, David Aliu: “It wasn’t ideal having the weekend off after our recent wins as we had momentum and ideally, it would have been good to keep playing. The lay-off doesn’t take away from our goals of making the play-offs and getting to semi-finals of the BBL Trophy. Playing Rocks is going to be tough as I know Sterling Davis will have them well prepared for the two games this weekend. We just have to take it one game at a time and try to get the wins.
