With support from a number of important partners including the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities and Shell, Twilight has grown into a National programme which provides free basketball sessions in a safe setting alongside the opportunity for young people to shape their own programme and access the information that they need to develop. 

The Shell Twilight programme is delivered by qualified coaches and youth workers who provide  a variety of content suitable to the participants. Every session contains high energy basketball coaching which is designed to ensure that first and foremost the participants enjoy their time at Shell Twilight and have a positive experience of physical activity.

Educational Timeouts are a key part of the programme and use the concept of a Tactical Timeout within a basketball game to create a section within the sessions where the participants have access to information and experts specifically focused upon their needs. The content of these Educational Timeouts  varies depending on the young people involved. Examples include: the dangers of alcohol, careers advice, conflict resolution sessions, St Andrews First Aid and smoking cessation.

The Shell Twilight groups from across Scotland regularly travel to play against one another within the Shell Twilight Mini-League. This provides the participants with the opportunity to visit other communities across Scotland, meet other young people and enjoy competitive matches.

The participants of the programme are also provided with the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications and experience. Several of the coaches who involved with the programme were at one point a participant and have now gained a Getting Started coaching qualification and support the delivery of the session with experienced mentors.
