Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first fan’s page of the 2008-2009 season. This time last year, I wrote about how long the summer seemed, and how glad basketball fans everywhere are when the summer – finally – ends. At the risk of sounding repetitive: Hooray! The basketball season is here again!
Ahem. Yes, so anyway, on with the fan’s page.
Well, it’s certainly been a summer of change! The biggest change, of course, is our venue. After playing our games at Braehead for six seasons, it’s going to take a little getting used to at the Kelvin Hall, and though I’m sure we’ll all miss one of the most impressive venues the BBL had, we won’t miss the nasty, sticky floors that were an unfortunately common occurrence in Braehead Arena. Kelvin Hall, however, does have a major advantage over Braehead – a smaller venue is much easier to fill with fans, and – of course – much easier to fill with noise. Oh yes, we will be raising the roof of the Kelvin Hall this season. Those fans who have been around since the Meadowbank days will vouch for the fact that a small venue can provide an atmosphere that Braehead – as great as it was – couldn’t quite reproduce (despite our best efforts, naturally).
As always happens during the BBL summer, players have moved onto pastures new – and new players have arrived at the Rocks. Already this team has won two away games – and in impressive style, by all accounts. Now – finally! – we have a home game in which to judge for ourselves about the new team. From what we saw at the friendly game, and the reports of the two away games, it’s going to be an exciting game, and – more importantly – and exciting season!

I have to say, before our last game with the Newcastle Eagles, I was beginning to panic about what I was going to write for this issue of the Fan’s Page. No one wants to hear about losing games, do they? I know that I certainly prefer to write about wins!
Every Rocks fan knows that the form book goes out of the window when the Eagles come to call, and this season’s first clash between the two teams did not disappoint.
The game – as games against the Eagles always are – was hard fought and exciting from the tip-off, and included nine lead changes in the second quarter alone – which is probably the reason that I have no nails left! In the end, though, the Rocks team prevailed against their closest rivals, and won the game 89-74, giving the team their first win at the Kelvin Hall. And against Newcastle Eagles, the current leaders of the BBL, no less! Let’s just hope that the rest of this season’s Rocks-Eagles battles finish in the same way! By the time you read this, the second such game will have already taken place in Newcastle, and hopefully the Rocks will have a second win against the Eagles. If there is one thing Rocks fans have learned over the years though, it is that ANYTHING can – and usually does – happen when the two teams face off against each other.
Of course, with the Eagles being our closest and fiercest rivals, the atmosphere at the games is never anything less than electric, and the smaller Kelvin Hall venue certainly came into its own with Newcastle visiting. There’s still room for more noise (the roof of the hall didn’t quite come off), but it’s certainly improving – now we just need to keep it going!
The next visitors to the Kelvin Hall are Worthing Thunder and the Worcester Wolves. Both teams lost to the Rocks earlier in the season at their home venues, and will no doubt be looking to even the score when they come to visit. If those games are anything as entertaining as the game against the Eagles, then I’m sure no one will be complaining! I know I certainly won’t, although perhaps my nerves would disagree.
As a final note, when you read this, we will have played another two away games – the first, as I mentioned above – is the Newcastle game. The second is against the Cheshire Jets, which will be attended by at least four Rocks fans – yes, the Fan’s Page is going on its first road trip of the season, so no doubt there will be a blog to commemorate the event at some point. Especially if we win!

Well, we didn’t win the away game at Newcastle – although, by all accounts we put in a respectable performance, pushing the Eagles right to the end. Thankfully, however, the trip to Warrington to play the Cheshire Jets proved more productive – though by no means less hard fought. Nail-biter doesn’t even begin to cover that game! The fact that there was no visible game clock or scoreboard – at least from where we were sitting – made it feel more than a little surreal. I never noticed how often I looked at the clock during a game until it wasn’t there anymore! Incidentally, having no idea how long is left of the fourth quarter – or what the score is – is definitely not good for the nerves. But, we came out on top, winning 75-82, and making for a very happy trip back up the road.
The next game was at home to Worthing Thunder – and was...well, interesting to say the least. The first two quarters were the stuff of nightmares – for both teams – and I was beginning to wonder if the curse of the Kelvin Hall was back. I have so say, I have never been so glad to be wrong! I don’t know what Sterling said to the team at half time but when they came out for the second half they looked like a different team! In the fourth, we saw the team that we’ve become accustomed to seeing, and they got the win. Not the most consistent win, perhaps, but hey, you’ll get no complaints from me. Any win is better than a loss.
Finally, the last game – as I write this – was an away game to London Capital. I can’t really say much about this game, other than it seemed to take forever for the BBL to upload scores, but the win – when it FINALLY came – did push us into the top spot of the BBL (definitely worth waiting for!). Now we just need to fend off challenges from teams such as the Eagles and Everton Tigers and stay there for the rest of the season!

Welcome to the very first fan’s page of 2009! I hope everyone had a great festive period, and survived the New Year relatively intact – aside from a hangover or two, of course. If the games of 2009 are anything like the last game of 2008, then it’s sure to be a good year for the Rocks fans!
The largest crowd the Kelvin Hall has ever seen turned out to see the Rocks take on the Sheffield Sharks – a team well known to the staggering number of Rocks players who were once Sharks players themselves. And what a game it was! Especially after the technical foul on Sterling which really kick-started both the team and the fans – although having the player-coach foul out in the third quarter was a bit of a blow for us. I have to admit, when the Sharks were 70-74 ahead and had possession almost half way through the fourth quarter, I was peeking through my fingers to watch! Not to mention that the last 17.7 seconds seemed to last an eternity! Still, it was – in my opinion, at least – the best game of the season (so far). Never let it be said that basketball is not an exciting game! The win gives the Rocks a great start to their BBL Trophy campaign.
The Sheffield Sharks come visiting again for our first home game of 2009, and there’s no doubt that they will be looking to claim the win that they so narrowly missed out on the last time. The Rocks will face a tough challenge from them, especially coming as it comes on the heels of what will – without a shadow of a doubt – be a hard fought battle in Newcastle on Friday night. Oh yeah, and we also play against the Sharks – for the third time in less than three weeks – on the 16th of January. At their place, this time – just for a wee change.
To round January off, we have the second Rocks-Eagles match of the New Year – also the second of the Rocks’ trophy games against the Eagles – anyone who has ever been to a Rocks-Eagles match will know that this is not a game to be missed. The Northern derby matches usually turn into the most exciting and memorable – not to mention hard fought – games in the season. With each team having one win against the other so far this season, there’s everything to play for in the two trophy games.

Well...there’s not much I can say about the trophy game against Newcastle. In fact, if it’s all the same to everyone else, I think I’d rather block that particular memory out. Which is a pity, considering that it was our first sold-out game of the season.
Losing out on qualification for the next round of the trophy just means that we concentrate on staying in the running for the BBL Championship. As I write this, we are top of the table, but Everton face off against the MK Lions tonight, and if the Tigers win, then they go top with a game in hand.
The next three games see Plymouth coming up to Scotland for the first (and second) time this season, as well as the return of the Cheshire Jets. All three are must win games for the Rocks, if we are going to keep our title challenge alive. This would be where we come in. The number of people coming to Rocks games is growing all the time – we sold out the Kelvin Hall for our last home game! However, despite this fact, the Eagles’ Away support still managed to be heard over us home fans!
We really need to get behind our team now, and let the guys know it by making as much noise as possible. Whether you’re joining in the defence chant, clapping your hands or beating a drum – anything goes, so long as you are supporting your team! (Well – anything goes except whistles – blowing whistles tends to upset the refs, for some reason!) An enthusiastic crowd not only makes the atmosphere a million times better, it also acts as the sixth man for the team – and let’s face it, anything that gives us an advantage over our opponents has got to be a good thing!
So come on, let’s raise the roof of the Kelvin Hall and get behind our team!
LET’S GO ROCKS!!!

Hmm...I’m not really sure what to say. I would love to be able to say that the Rocks have been playing fabulously, and that we’re top of the league...but that would be lying. That’s not to say that the team is playing badly – most of the time they aren’t. What they are, at the moment, is inconsistent. Yes, there are times that the plays are perfect, the passing is incredible, and the shots are fantastic. However, there are also times when we turn the ball over far too easily, when the shots refuse to drop and the offensive rebound becomes impossible.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, this is what we call the game of basketball. I’ve been a Rocks fan for almost seven years now, and I have to say, there are always a few games each season when I think “why do I do this to myself?” Thankfully, these occasions are becoming fewer and farther between – anyone who remembers the Rocks’ first season in Braehead will be able to attest to the huge progress that’s been made since then, especially considering the many changes in players and coaches. In that first season, it seemed to take forever for us to get that first win on the home court – far longer than it took this season. Despite a slow start, that Rocks team – which included Phil Perre and Shawn Myers, now both Cheshire Jets players – finished in eighth place, and qualified for the last spot in the playoff competition.
We also managed to beat the top three teams in the league to win the playoff championship that year.
So, ok, we might have had a few losses in the past few games, and we may have slipped down the league table a little bit, but the situation is hardly catastrophic – not to mention that there’s a LOT of time between now and the end of the season.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in the past seven years it’s that if you shout and scream loud enough, and get behind the team, anything can – and will – happen.
LET’S GO ROCKS!
