It’s a magic number…

As Mersey put the BBL Championship to bed at the start of the month, the final piece of silverware left to compete for is the BBL Championship Playoff title. The Rocks have a long history with the playoffs – qualifying every year since their move to Braehead. In the previous 8 season the Rocks have reached the quarter-finals 3 times, been knocked-out during the semi-finals once, have been the runners up 3 times and won the playoffs once in 2003. Could 2011 be the year of the Rock?

Our season this year has been far from stable, after losing out on the BBL Trophy and the BBL Cup at the start of the season the Rocks ascended the ladder to share the top spot for a number of weeks – before slowly sliding down the table to finish the season in 6th place.

In Chinese culture 6 is considered a ‘lucky’ number. The number 6 is believed to have auspicious meaning because its name sounds similar to words that have positive meanings.  What does this have to do with the Rocks playoff campaign, I hear you cry!? In the 2002/03 season the Rocks finished the BBL Championship in 6th place, and went on to win the playoffs. In the 2004/05 season the Rocks finished the BBL Championship in 6th place, and were knocked out in the semi-final stages. In 2010/11 the Rocks finished the BBL Championship in 6th place, and _________________________.

There is one other area the number 6 keeps coming up, and that’s you. The fans. The Rocks need you to get behind the team and cheer them to victory – be the 6th man. We can do this. All you need to do is believe

Final Thought – Who Moved My Cheese?

With this season drawing to a close the annual question springs to mind “What can I do on a Sunday afternoon now?” Plans on how to fill the void left by basketball usually start big, like redecorating, giving up alcohol or finally fixing the decrepit motorbike in the garage, but usually they turn into a lazy day of not doing anything to strenuous – maybe I’ll start small this summer, for a change... I don’t know what the off season holds for myself or the team, one thing is for sure the Rocks will be back next year, ready to play basketball. For you – the fans.

Rock on,
