Glasgow Rocks stalwart Sterling Davis has now been with the club for 5 seasons, and in that time has become the face of the Glasgow Rocks Franchise. We ask him what he finds so appealing about Glasgow and the Rocks for him to stick around for such a long time.
I have just always been attracted to city life and Glasgow gives you that feel. It seems like there is always something going on or someone coming through the city to keep you occupied. With the Rocks, it’s more the professionalism of the organization that I enjoy being a part of.
The Player/Coach role is something very rare in professional sports, however, Sterling has taken on the role with great success and we ask him how he feels he has progressed through the years and what he is looking for in the future.
I think after you have been a player/coach for a few seasons you start to understand what to expect but never gets any easier. As for the future, I would definitely like to test out being only a coach. I know it’s a completely different feel and view on things but it’s something I would like to experiment with. I would like to think my years of coaching as a player has developed me as a coach alone.
It has been one long roller coaster ride for the Rocks this season and with the playoffs just around the corner the Rocks will be hoping to do some damage and be recognised for the team that they are.
I think the playoff is a season in itself. It’s a chance to give every team involved a clean slate. Records no longer matter and whoever is in the competition gets equal advantage which makes it exciting. We will be one of those teams but we need to pick up the form to make some noise in it. As far as our biggest threat, I would have to say any team that makes the playoffs. With the season the way it has been every team will be extremely difficult to face.
Hopefully the Rocks faithful come out to support the team during the playoff period. With crowds steadily growing at Rocks home games we ask Sterling how he thinks basketball is faring in GB and if the recent automatic Team GB qualification to the 2012 Olympic Games will have a positive effect on basketball in Scotland?
Hopefully it will bring awareness of the game to the UK starting in the grassroots level. Hopefully the younger generation will be watching and see that basketball could open the door to participate in the Olympics and motivate them to begin at an early age which in turn will bring on the progression of quality players in the country.
The Rocks are due to move to the brand new National Indoor Sports Arena in 18 months we will all be hoping that Sterling will still be a Rock and get to be part of the transition period.
I would love to be a part of that transition for the organization. I think it’s a great step in the right direction for the team and growth of basketball in Glasgow. The arena is looking like it will be a spectacle in itself to see and in an area that has a huge tradition in sport.
