Yanders Signs for 3-Years [return]

The Scottish Rocks have signed team captain Rob Yanders to a 3-year contract. The signing comes on the back of the Rocks’ announced move to Glasgow and ultimately the new National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA).

“It’s great to know that I’ll be with the Rocks for at least 3 more years,” said Yanders, “and I’m excited about our future in Glasgow.

“Kelvin Hall will give us a great atmosphere for the next few years and the new arena will be incredible. I can’t wait to get back to Glasgow and start practice. We’ve got some unfinished business to take care of.”

HISTORY OF SUCCESS...
Yanders is a 6-year veteran of the BBL having spent the past 3 seasons with the Rocks. He has been named an “All Star” as one of the League’s top 10 players in both 2006/07 and 2007/08.

The Rocks have twice reached the BBL Playoff finals in Yanders’ Scottish tenure and his numbers prove his value. This past season (2007/08), the American ‘floor general’ led the Rocks in minutes played and assists (6 per game) while pouring in 530 points (16 per game) on 53% shooting. He also hauled down 5.3 rebounds per game – an impressive count for a point guard.

Player coach Sterling Davis is glad to have his captain back.

“Signing Rob has been our #1 priority in putting the team together and I’m glad we’ve finally made it official. I’ve played with Rob for a long time – both here and at Sheffield – and it’s hard to imagine playing without him. Thankfully I won’t have to.”

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTOR…
The 3-year deal with the Rocks also includes an extensive community role that Yanders will serve jointly through Glasgow Community & Safety Services and the Govan based charity Scottish Sports Futures. Yanders commented on his dual role.

“I love playing basketball, but working with these kids really means a lot to me. Thankfully some good people showed me the path to a better life when I was a kid on the streets and if I can help even one kid in Glasgow make the right decisions then my efforts have been worthwhile.”

THE SEASON AHEAD...
Yanders will return to Scotland in the next few weeks to begin preparations for the upcoming season. On the Rocks 08/09 prospects he had this to say:

“We’ve been really close to winning a few titles in recent years and I’m tired of being almost champions. This year we need to get it done and it looks like we’ll be binging in the kind of guys that will help us get it done.”

Davis says he is close to signing a couple fresh but familiar faces.

“We haven’t finalised things yet, but we’re real close on a couple guys that will add a new dimension to this team. I can’t say who they are, but the fans will know them and I think they’ll be excited about seeing them in a Rocks uniform.”
