Rocks Hit Jackpot with Big Man ‘Chino’ [return]

The SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks have added their first new face to the 2008/09 squad in the name of high-flying forward Randy George. The 6’7” (200 cm) native of the British Virgin Islands goes by the nickname ‘Chino’.

George spent last season in a Sheffield Sharks uniform where he averaged 7 points and 5.3 rebounds while playing an average of 17 minutes per game. Rocks player/coach Sterling Davis feels he landed a hidden gem in George.

“Randy is a guy who I’ve been impressed with from the first time I saw him. He has a raw talent for the game and great athleticism and agility for his size. I think he has so much more to show that maybe didn’t come out last year.”

Many saw that raw talent on display as he excited a hungry crowd during the BBL’s 2008 Molten Slam Dunk Contest at the Playoff Finals Weekend in Birmingham. The Rocks resident ‘Duke of Dunk’, Gareth Murray, also participated in the contest – however, George may soon be crowned King. Murray was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the contest while George advanced to the final and finished in 2nd place.

Aside from the excitement of George’s talent, Davis says the islander has the right attitude as well.

“I’ve also done my research on Randy to know that we’ll be getting a great guy who is hard-working and wants to do anything to help his team to win,” said Davis. “We are all looking forward to his arrival in the city and I in particular look forward to working and playing alongside him.”

George will arrive in Glasgow around 1 September to begin preparations for the Rocks first season at Kelvin Hall.
