The celebrated Jump2it schools programme, launched in Glasgow schools in 2006, is being extended nationwide to include12,000 young people in five more of Scotland’s cities.
Jump2it, delivered by Scottish Rocks professional players and Scottish Sports Futures (SSF), is a primary schools programme designed to improve the knowledge of young people by promoting increased physical activity and exercise while highlighting the risks of poor diet, smoking and drug and alcohol abuse.
In between training sessions the Rocks players take time out to visit primary schools to deliver this educational message which is reinforced by follow-up training sessions delivered by SSF qualified coaches.
The programme is backed by the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities scheme which invests money taken from criminals into funding community based initiatives designed to help to build stronger, healthier communities across Scotland.
Along with Jump2it, Twilight Basketball will also be launched in Dundee, Edinburgh, Inverness and Stirling. Twilight Basketball targets young people on Friday and Saturday nights reaching young people when and where they are most at risk.
Ian Reid CEO of the charity Scottish Sports Futures said
“Scottish Sports Futures role is to ensure delivery of Twilight Basketball to those young people most at risk where and when they are most at risk. We look forward to the challenge and to making our contribution over the next 3 years and beyond.”
This expansion is an exciting new move for the Rocks players who are committed to helping kids stay on the right track and fulfill their potential. Rocks players are looking forward to spending more time in the classroom with Scottish youngsters and thrive on witnessing the positive effect their influence can have on the lives of young people.
Rob Yanders, Captain of the Scottish Rocks said:
“All of us at the Rocks are looking forward to being involved in this expansion programme. The success of our delivery in Glasgow over the last 5 years means we now have a chance to take this great project nationwide. With the support of the Government we look forward to playing our part in building a Safer and Stronger Scotland”.
