Troon have always been a tough team to play against no matter what level you face them at. The last time the Rocks faced them was at the Strathclyde Cadet Cup final back in May where Troon ran out winners by 16 points.
The Rocks under 18 side is now made up of nearly all of that team from May so they had the Tornadoes in their sights for some pay back.
Troon started the game the better side going up by 6 points early on through their National League guard Sam Jack. Sam hit 10 of Troon’s 20 points in the first quarter and seemed to be their main ‘go to guy’. Big three’s for Daban Kamil and Sean Cole stopped the Rocks from fading away very early on. Rocks 12 – Troon 20
A variety of Rocks players stepped onto the floor as Coach Hutton strived to find the right combination in the front court. Mohsin Kayani stepped up to shut Sam Jack down through some fantastic defence. This spurred on the rest of the team and collectively demonstrated exceptional hustle at both ends of the floor. Six different Rocks (Sean Cole, William Whitehead, Mark Jamosin, Sean Griffin, Keiran Mitchell and Gian Ituralde) got their names on the score sheet as they moved the ball really well and started to claw back the score. Rocks 32 – Troon 33
The third quarter saw the lead change hands several times with neither team managing to break away. Again, more Rocks players (Mohammad Ibrahim, Danny McNeil) got their name on the score sheet as they showed how deep the team can go and still be effective. Troon’s Rob Lauchlin was on fire and the main threat for the Rocks defence as he nailed 7 points in a row to start the quarter. Seven points from Sean Griffin and four from Sean Cole led the way for the Rocks as they managed to go into the last quarter with a one point lead. Rocks 47 – Troon 46
The Rocks began the last ten minutes with venom as they quickly took control of the tempo and out hustled their rivals, diving for loose balls, grabbing consecutive rebounds and generally showing they wanted the win more. Again, showing their depth, the Rocks had 5 different players on the scoresheet with Sean Cole again leading the way with 7 as he attacked the hoop from all angles. Mohsin Kayani was again instrumental defensively as he stopped Sam Jack from picking up any points at all. With the score at 54-52 to the Rocks, it was going to take a massive play from either team to make a difference.
The turning point was 30 seconds of scrapping and fighting for possession with 4 minutes to go at the offensive end as both teams fought to secure possession. Great hustle from Mohsin Kayani, Sean Cole and Daban Kamil resulted in possession of the ball which culminated with a huge 3 pointer nailed by Daban to put the Rocks up by 5. Troon called a time out to try and re-gain their composure but it wasn’t enough as the Rocks came out and scored again with a great drive from Sean Cole to lead by 7. The Rocks managed to keep the margin despite some enthusiastic play from Rob Lauchlin and hold on for the win. Rocks 63 – Troon 56
