The Glasgow Rocks welcome the Essex Pirates to their home court for the first time in BBL history on Sunday. They will be looking to extend their run of wins to 3 and capitlize on their home court advantage.
The Rocks go into their second home game in two weeks, as they host the Essex Pirates on Sunday at Kelvin Hall. The teams meet for the first time this season, and Rocks' player-coach Sterling Davis, is looking forward to seeing what the Pirates will bring with them to Scotland. He made it clear that his side will be treating the game just like any other, and emphasised the fact that the Pirates will have a lot to prove in their first season as a professional club. 'I think it will be as tough as any other game throughout the course of the season. Every game is a tough one. They have a lot to prove being they are new to the league, but I think we are fine right now.'
Whereas some coaches would identify a certain individuals as key to their team's success, Davis was keen to stress that at the Rocks, it is the team effort that has ensured they have had a positive 5-4 start to the season, and currently sit inside the top eight in seventh position.
The Pirates will be hurting prior to this fixture, as they went down 70-48 against PAWS London Capital last weekend, but Head Coach Tim Lewis has a positive mindset as his side make the journey north of the border, with plans to stay the night before the game in order to fresher.
Despite their recent run of results, including a 77-88 loss at Worthing last weekend and a 70-99 defeat at the Marshall MK Lions the weekend before, the all- European Pirates side have looked competitive in the BBL this year. After a thrilling one point (61-60) win against PAWS London Capital on their opening night of the campaign, Lewis' side also picked up an unexpected 88-82 at the Worthing Thunder, to show that they can be competitive in the UK's top flight.
The Rocks meanwhile, revamped their backcourt this summer with the addition of American scorer Jessie Sapp to compliment stalwart Rob Yanders, and both have featured, along with Forward Mike Copeland, in the BBL Team of the Week on more than one occasion this season. After opening night agony against the Newcastle Eagles, a game which they lost 86-90, the Rocks have taken the scalps of Marshall MK Lions (96-78), Worcester Wolves (93-87), PAWS London Capital (83-65) and the Everton Tigers (84-69) before a convincing 111-59 victory over the Wolves last weekend again.
