Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders solid start to the season continued north of the border with a 69-74 win at SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks.
The Riders move into a tie for fourth position alongside Marshall MK Lions and Kularoos Plymouth Raiders, while Rocks slip a place to joint eighth with BiG Storage Cheshire Jets.
After a tight, scrappy first quarter, which the home side shaded 19-15, defence ruled once again up to half time. Riders had reduced a 25-17 deficit to just one point with eight seconds left before Rocks scored the final five points of the half.
This included the referees summoning Rocks point-guard Rob Yanders from the locker room to take two free throws during the interval which put his team 31-26 in front.
Riders showed signs of an improvement on offence during the third quarter taking the lead at 37-38 with 6.30 left in the period. This advantage was stretched to 48-52 heading into the final stanza.
An exciting fourth quarter saw Rocks fight back from 58-63 down to 69-68 up in the final minute thanks to three three-pointers from Bilal Clarance and a two from Sterling Davis.
However, the Riders wouldn’t be denied and after Chad McKnight tied the score at 69-69 with a free throw, Terrance Woodyard nailed a three with six seconds left to put the visitors in front. Darren Mills iced the game with a last second two.
