Yanders Convinced of Rocks Climb [return]

Rob Yanders, co-captain of the SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks says his team are better than their current 8th place position in the British Basketball League.

After Sunday’s opening round game in the BBL Cup (5:00pm Braehead Arean), Yanders is convinced the Braehead side will begin to climb the table.

“We’re so much better than this. I’m frustrated with some of our close losses, but there’s no doubt we’ll turn it around. As sure as the grass is green, the Rocks will improve from here. Ask me again in a month and you’ll see.”

With just 3 wins in 8 starts, the Rocks find themselves well behind where they had hoped to be at this point, but head coach Sterling Davis also says there is valid reason for fans to be optimistic.

“We have a team with both talent and experience. Once we sort out a few little things, those assets will begin to shine through. I’m sure of it.

“Bringing in an assistant coach (Rafael Silva) for me was the first step. Once he is fully integrated, you’ll see what we can really do. This isn’t how I planned for our season to start, but we’ll continue to work hard every day until we get it right. And we WILL get it right.”

Before the Rocks can climb the BBL table, they will on Sunday play their first round game in the BBL Cup – a straight knock-out competition in which the Rocks were finalists in last season.

Their opponent on Sunday is the Worcester Wolves who currently have just one win this season and sit bottom of the BBL table. Numbers would say this should be a comfortable Rocks win, but the BBL has been far from predictable this season.

Earlier this season, Worcester gained their only win over the same Leicester team that beat the Rocks at Braehead. In an even bigger surprise, Everton Tigers – recent losers to the Rocks in overtime – grabbed their lone victory over defending BBL Champions Guildford Heat just 2 weeks ago. The Heat begin their European “ULEB Cup” campaign next week.

It all adds up to another intense battle for the Rocks and edge-of-your-seat action for the Braehead faithful.
