Following a disappointing performance against Newcastle Eagles in their previous game Scotland were determined to make amends against a very strong Danum Eagles select squad, which included four players from US College basketball with experience in 1st and 2nd division NCAA.
In a high scoring 1st quarter both teams were shooting well, Simon Flockhart had a good start with some close in buckets and Grant Gibson came off the bench and had a great spell with three 3 pointers in a row, the team were tied 22-22 at the end of the period.
This was proving to be a very entertaining game with the lead changing hands several times. Danum were proving a real handful, a far better team than Newcastle Eagles who Scotland fell to last week. It was to Scotland’s credit that they hung in following a 3 point blitz from the Doncaster side to only trail by 1 point 47-46 at the break.
Scotland made some defensive adjustments at half time to key on certain players who were doing the damage and this helped initially as Scotland continued to make inroads. Dan Donnelly was having a fine shooting game, however it was still nip and tuck as Scotland took a slight lead 67-66.
Into the final period and it was difficult to separate these two teams as the lead continued to change hands, Scotland got a huge boost as Steve Leven came along the baseline and threw down a thunderous dunk in traffic to take the lead. However towards the end Danum hit three big 3 pointers on the trot to take what looked like an unassailable lead of 7 points with about 30 seconds left to play. Tremendous credit is due to Scotland for the character they showed in coming back as they sent Danum to the foul line, they only made 2 from 8, Leven hit a big 3 pointer and then we made shots from the foul line to get within 1 point with 4.5 seconds left. A time out was called by Scotland and we managed to free up Leven for a lay up to score with 0.5 of a second to snatch the victory 90-89.
This was a great advert for basketball, with many people saying it was the best game they had seen. Doncaster brought a good support which added to the excellent atmosphere. Danum made 12 x 3s and had 21 points in the paint. Scotland hit 9 x 3s and 24 points in the paint.
A good spread of points saw Steve Leven, 21, Simon Flockhart 16,, Dan Donnelly 12, Grant Gibson 11, Ross Campbell 9, Laurie Costello 9, Ike Attah 8. SATURDAY 5 JUNE 2010 CITADEL SPORTS CENTRE AYR, 17.00 TIP OFF.
