Expectations of Excellence as Davis Readies Rocks for Semi-final [return]

The SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks take on perennial nemesis Newcastle Eagles on Saturday in the semi-final of the BBL Cup at Crawley’s K2 Arena (3:30pm tip off). Rocks player/coach Sterling Davis has high expectations… for both sides.

“The guys have been working hard all week and I expect them to be focused and ready from the opening tip on Saturday.”

The Rocks will wear their home blue uniforms for the big game, and Rocks fans will hope their side’s strong home showing against the Eagles just two weeks ago will continue. The Rocks downed the Tynesiders by a convincing 19 points at Braehead Arena on the 2nd of December. That result shocked some, but not Davis.

“That’s the way I feel we can play every night. We came in ready to do a tough job and we stuck to our game plan for 40 minutes. That kind of effort usually gets results and that’s the approach I expect from the whole squad on Saturday.”

Davis also expects the Eagles to bring new motivation and a new approach.

“We also had the motivation of revenge in our last game (Newcastle had beaten the Rocks in double overtime earlier this season), and I’m sure that helped us. They’ll be looking for revenge this time.”

In addition to the Rocks most recent win over the Eagles, the Scottish side also knocked the Eagles out of the BBL Cup last season with a 25-point semi-final defeat at Braehead Arena.

Davis added some final thoughts,

“There’s a lot of history between these clubs, and I’m sure Fab (Eagles coach Fabulous Flournoy) will have his guys ready. They’re leading the league with good reason and I expect the Eagles to show their best on Saturday.

“Of course, I expect our guys to respond accordingly.”

One thing is for certain, we should all expect the unexpected… and another classic Rocks-Eagles battle.
