'Big Mo' Confident for Big Game [return]

The SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks take on 2nd place Guildford Heat Sunday at Braehead Arena in a game that could make or break the Rocks’ season. After a disappointing loss in Plymouth on Wednesday, Rocks big man (6’ 10”) Moritz Wohlers is confident the Braehead side will bounce back.

“Guildford are always tough,” said the German national team player, “but we beat them a few weeks ago and this is an important game, so I’m confident we’ll bounce back and get the job done.”

The season has reached a critical stage where 5 or 6 teams are battling to finish in the top four and earn that crucial home-court advantage for the BBL Playoff quarterfinals. The Rocks currently sit in 4th place, just 2 points behind Guildford and 4 behind League leaders Newcastle. Milton Keynes and Everton are close behind.

With some teams playing two games this weekend, the table could take a whole new look by Monday. Rocks player/coach Sterling Davis simply wants to play the game.

“I can’t wait to get back into a game. I’m tired of all the talk. Now we just want to get out there and do what we know we need to do.

“I came down pretty hard on the guys after Wednesday’s game, but looking back we didn’t play that bad. We had a few lapses and we know that can lose a game for you, but now it’s time to just get back out there and get the job done. Enough talk, we just want to play.”

Primary Pre-game
Prior to the Rocks tip-off, youngsters representing four Glasgow primary schools will take to the Braehead court for the semi-finals of the Jump2it tournament. Sandwood Primary will face Crookston Primary in one semi-final while Gowanbank Primary will take on Burnbrae Primary in the other. The winners will play the final at half-time with the Rocks fans to cheer them on.

Jump2it is a primary school education programme created and run by the Scottish Sports Futures charity based in Govan. Jump2it takes Rocks players into primary schools to talk about important topics including the dangers of smoking and the importance of proper nutrition and exercise.

The children also learn a bit about basketball and are provided with a block of coaching and the chance to form teams and enter a Jump2it tournament. This block of Jump2it involved 19 schools who formed 76 teams comprised of 685 pupils.
