Rocks Community Clubs (RCC) are a Scottish Sports Futures initiative which aims to increase children’s basketball opportunities throughout Scotland.
Participation sessions are set up to provide the chance for primary school kids to play basketball after school, if there is no existing local provision. During the 2013/14 school year, Glasgow Rocks players advertised basketball classes to over 11,000 primary school children through the Jump2it programme. This resulted in almost 500 children attending the basketball sessions as an extracurricular activity.
Rocks Community Clubs take place weekly during term time and focus on improving basic fundamental skills while playing fun games. The sessions are coached by qualified and enthusiastic staff, including regular appearances from Glasgow Rocks players, and great care is taken to encourage the children to pursue a life in sport and exercise. Previous Rocks Community Clubs participants have progressed to play at international level for Scotland while many now play for competitive teams.
Each community club have their own team name and all children are given the opportunity to play tournaments and exhibition games against other Rocks Community Clubs. An annual event is also held where all clubs will meet at the Emirates Arena, competing to play at half time of a Glasgow Rocks game in front of thousands of fans.
Scottish Sports Futures work in partnership with basketballscotland, Glasgow Life and Cashback for Communities to make this wonderful initiative possible. Clubs are run throughout the school year and new participants and volunteers are always welcome.
